  • Deconstructing Amazon EC2 Spot Instance Pricing, Orna Agmon Ben-Yehuda, Muli Ben-Yehuda, Assaf Schuster, Dan Tsafrir. The 3rd IEEE International Conference on Cloud Computing Technology and Science (CloudCom 2011), Athens, Greece. Acceptance ratio: 24%. bibtex. An extended version appeared in ACM Transactions on Economics and Computation (TEAC).
This paper builds on data from two websites which are no longer active. Their data, however, is still available from SpotWatch and CloudExchange. Caveat emptor: since Amazon introduced a second Linux instance type, the SpotWatch data holds the two price histories together, and they appear like two price bands (or like a wider band, in some cases). Also, since this work first appeared, Amazon radically changed their pricing mechanism, as can be seen on the last slide of the presentation, so prices no longer change according to the mechanism described int he paper.

Free Software

  • Spotprice: A matlab simulator that creates price traces according to our understanding of Amazon EC2’s algorithm in the past and present.
  • A dynamic memory memcached: memcached that can kill memory slabs to free mmeory, and change its target memory on the fly. On Github.
  • make_site: A package for creating static web pages with menu, using css and tables. Used by haifux.org.
